What is a Girder Transporter?

DATE : Aug 29th, 2023

Girder transporter also called tyre transporter, beam trailer, girder carrier. Girder transporter is a type of heavy equipment used for lifting and moving large girders or beams. The girder transporter is used in construction and other heavy industries for tasks such as erecting steel structures, building bridges, or moving large pieces of equipment. The transporter is designed to be highly mobile and versatile, allowing it to be used in a variety of different settings and configurations.

Girder transporters come in various forms, such as self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs), which are essentially a series of connected platforms with wheels that can be controlled individually to maneuver the girder through tight spaces and around obstacles. They may also be equipped with hydraulic systems to lift and lower the girder, as well as extendable arms or booms for positioning the girder accurately.

The design and size of a girder transporter can vary depending on the specific needs of the project, but they are typically heavy-duty vehicles that require specialized training and expertise to operate safely and efficiently.

Types of Girder Transporters
Multi-axle Tyre Trolley
Multi-axle Tyre Trolley is designed for transportation of Bridge Beams at site, mainly from casting yard to the erection point. Commonly use as part of the system with Double Truss or Single Box Beam launcher for Bridge Beam erection. Multi-axle Tyre Trolley is powered by diesel engine. Multi-axle Tyre Trolley ‘ loading capacities normally range from 2 axles 120T to 16 axles or 17 axles 900T.

Beam Trolley (on Track)
Track Beam Trolley is designed for transportation of Bridge Beams at site running of track. It is also commonly use as part of the system with Double Truss Beam Launcher or Single Box Beam launcher for Bridge Beam erection. Beam Trolley is powered by Electric Motor or Diesel Generator. Track Beam Trolley consisted of 2 parts, an active Trolley and a passive Trolley. The active Trolley will be situated at the rear with a driver seat and generator set pulling behind. The trolley is designed for balancing of speed and stability.

Features of Girder Transporter
Girder transporters are specialized vehicles or equipment designed for transporting and positioning large and heavy girders used in construction projects. Here are some of the features commonly found in girder transporters:

  • Modular design: Tyre transporters are typically modular in design, consisting of individual platforms or modules that can be combined or separated depending on the size and weight of the girder being transported. This allows for flexibility in the configuration of the transporter to match the specific requirements of the project.
  • Self-propelled: Girder transporters are self-propelled, meaning they can move without being towed by another vehicle. This allows for greater maneuverability and control when transporting girders on the construction site.
  • Hydraulic lifting: Many girder transporters are equipped with hydraulic systems that allow for the lifting and lowering of girders. This feature is crucial for positioning girders accurately and safely during construction.
  • Remote control: Girder transporters are often operated remotely, allowing the operator to control the transporter from a safe distance and get a better view of the girder being transported.
  • Steerable axles: Girder transporters typically have multiple steerable axles, which allow for greater maneuverability when navigating around obstacles on the construction site.
  • Load sensors: Many girder transporters have load sensors that can provide feedback on the weight and balance of the girder being transported, helping to ensure safe and stable transport.

Overall, girder transporters are designed with a variety of features to provide safe, precise, and efficient transportation and positioning of girders on construction sites.

Girder Transporter Price
The price of a girder transporter can vary significantly depending on various factors such as the type, size, and configuration of the equipment. In general, girder transporters are high-end and specialized equipment, and their prices can range from tens of thousands to several million dollars.

For example, a small self-propelled modular transporter (SPMT) designed to carry up to 60 tons can cost around $100,000 to $200,000, while a larger SPMT capable of carrying up to 1,000 tons or more can cost several million dollars. Additionally, if a girder transporter requires customization or additional features, the price can increase accordingly.

It’s also worth noting that the cost of operating a girder transporter can be significant due to factors such as fuel consumption, maintenance, and specialized operator training. However, the benefits of increased efficiency, safety, and accuracy that girder transporters provide can outweigh their initial cost and make them a worthwhile investment for construction companies and contractors.
